Back on the road to sucess Game 74 vs Dbacks

Bert,Le Anne, and Tim- a diehard Giants fan from Arizona

Bert,Le Anne, and Tim- a diehard Giants fan from Arizona

It was a tight fast game with both starting pitchers going 8 innings (Peavy 1 man short), and both throwing a hundred pitches. Poseys 4th inning solo homer provided the difference for a Giant win period. Romo got the 1 man he was asked to face for the 3rd out in the 8th. Casilla closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth. If they do as well today, the Giants will take the series, and perhaps come in to the final 2 weeks as a real threat to take the division.

And now for the ladies view- we wandered by TGI Fridays and decided it was fate, so we chose to go in for dinner. We began with a mojito for me and a Pinot Grigio for Bert. I had a New York Burger and Bert had the California Club. After missing lunch we were grateful for the hardy portions.

I forgot my phone so didn’t have anyones info with me…no tweets, texts, or photos the entire game. We met Tim, a Giants fan from AZ who wanted a photo with us, and lucky for me he sent it to me. Loran, a Giants fan from Ohio met up with us at our seats. She is going to be at the remaining games(except not all Dodgers games), and drove all the way from Ohio, hoping to be part of something special.

Bochy actually called this one the way I would have, including letting Peavy stay in a bit longer than he should have. I watched the score on the Dodgers game hoping the Rockies wouldn’t give up the lead. We had two things to celebrate last night; a GIANTS win and a dodgers loss. We are back to within 3 games! I am hoping we can gain some ground so that the Dodgers series isn’t as important. GO GIANTS!
The Internet at the Clarendon is spotty and I can’t get any more photos up, so will add them in when we get to the Omni in San Diego.

Ready for a turnaround vs Dbacks Game 73

We were guests on Marty Lurie's radio show

We were guests on Marty Lurie’s radio show

The covered stadium helped the Dbacks diehards (21,731) enjoy a pleasant win over the visiting Giants, while the high 90’s outside kept everyone uncomfortable.
But Trumbos’ grandslam in the 3rd gave the DBacks a 4-0 lead, which was never contested. Miley was in full control of the Giants until he left after 92 pitches in the 5th inning. The lead was never threatened, and the Giants must win the next 2 to take the series. We will be there to cheer them on an we continue the 81 for 93 adventure.
And now for the ladies view- We began the trip with a stop by AT&T for a guest spot on Marty Lurie’s pre-game show. We were made official members of his fan club and met lots of great Giants fans, who rooted us on as we come down the stretch on the final road trip of the 81 for 93 adventure. To hear the broadcast click here http://www.loveofthegameproductions.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Bert_Steinberg__GIANTS_Superfan-1410726496.mp3. It was loud and noisy, and of course there we techical problems with a remote, but we had fun meeting the New York lawyer behind the mike. We then hopped in the car and made it as far as Redlands before opting to call it a day. We headed out early and made it to the hotel in time to head to Chase after a quick siesta.
We went to the Arizona Baseball Club for dinner, and Bert ordered the chicken caesar salad which was enormous, and I ordered the tamales. The tamales were a piece of art on the plate, and the guacamole provided a complement to the eye and the palate.
I caught Bert grabbing a bite of his salad.

And now for my comments of the game. I want a world series. After the disaster with the Dodgers, I figured Bochy would play each game like it was an elimination game. It was apparent from the start that Vogie was not at his best, yet Bochy made no changes. I don’t understand when we put my beloved Boys from the bay at such a disadvantage. I seethed the entire game, and were it not for a fellow Pence fan visiting from Texas I might have stormed close to the field to let Bochy have a piece of my mind. IMHO when you have a stinker you need a great game to erase it, and that wasn’t what this game provided. Enough said. I hope he takes this game seriously, and we end up with a W tonight.
We are currently under flash flood watch and I hope we get thunder from the Giants bats tonight

Bert is busy taking a nap so I will begin. We had lunch with my sister-in-law and niece at the Canyon Club restaurant. The guacamole is made at the table and is delicious. I also liked the strawberry lemonade. We caught up a bit on family talk. Bert is a bit overwhelmed by my big family since he is an only child, who has an only, who has an only. Bert doesn’t mind being surrounded by woman, so he enjoyed the lunch too.

We came back for a siesta, the took a cab to the stadium, since 104 is a bit to warm for someone living in San Francisco. It was Native American recognition day at the stadium. Bert met Miss Haskell in the club. I think this is an Apache Nation, but I am not sure. The tribes had representative drummers and dancers. We got to see a wide variety of costumes and dance styles.
Dancers from many tribes danced to the drummer. I enjoyed this almost as much as the win.

We had a reservation at the Arizona baseball club. The Dbacks 1st round draft pick was having dinner in the club. He was outfitted in a Dbacks jersey over a button down shirt and bow tie. We had a good window table. It is the perfect place for a casual fan to have dinner with friends, chat, and catch the game. If you serious about scoring the game this is probably not the best choice because you can’t see the scoreboard. They have a carvery station, salad bar,

and my favorite the dessert bar.

John McCain was in attendance at last nights game, and Bert says” He once again was cheering for the losing side”. My take is I respect him for his service.

It is much more fun winning, so last night was much more fun. And now Bert’s take on the WIN!

Nothing lasts forever- not even a losing streak. Yesterdays 6-4 win brought our 81 away record to 21-15, a fine 6 over .500 so far. If that keeps up and the at home results only come to 50-50, usually expected for travel games, Le Anne and I will have to revise our plans to go to Dublin, early in October. Everyone should have such problems.

But the Giants really looked better, despite the excessive LOB(10) and they even scored runs in the 4th and 5th innings. So, after the expected win today we pick up our luggage at the Hyatt, head for the airport, and maybe some much-needed rest, after getting home after midnight. Then we will see Stef off Sat to her final 6 weeks as an undergrad( in Lille, France) and then on to San Diego for the July 4th weekend series. GO Giants
Until

Day to Recover in Phoenix June 20

We met these Giants fans in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix

Well we had a relaxing dinner at the Compass last night-prickly pear margarita for me and traditional for Bert, followed by steak dinner and flourless chocolate cake topped with marshmallows. It is a rotating restaurant on top of the Hyatt. We had great views of the mountains and the city.

We got a unique view of Chase field from the restaurant. We relaxed, booked flights to New York, Milwaukee, and Kansas City and then to bed.
We woke at 7 and had breakfast at Steve’s across from Hyatt. Good place to get a reasonable meal at a reasonable price. Bert had pepperjack omlet and I had french toast.
We returned to Hyatt and went to print out flight reservations. It was a $5 charge for 30 minutes at business center and this is only thing I didn’t like about our stay. We met a couple of Giants fans in the lobby from Palm Springs who had seen us on Kruk and Kuip broadcast. They wanted autographs. I was fun talking baseball. The husband has been a Giants fans for 50 plus years. Wow! We then went up to the room to complete our White Sox entry in the passport. Our baseball friends Gina and Mike who sit in the row in front of us sent us the book as a surprise gift to record the trip. We got our 1st stamp at US Cellular.

While on the 19th floor we met a Giants ticket holder who was a past fan of the year for attending 78 of the 81 home games. I don’t know if the Giants will consider us for this honor this season. She was here with a girlfriend who was celebrating her birthday and wanted a Giants win. We have a feeling the Giants will deliver. We will be in section 208 tonight, the Arizona baseball club tomorrow and section 313 row 2 seat 7,8 on Sunday.

Thanks for being part of our adventure.

What a great start! Another great come from behind, with 3 homers, and a series win. All that is needed is no lost series to win this division. On to L.A. and the real test. Of course winning 41 of the 81 on the road will help.
Maybe our presence will inspire the Giants to do great things. It was amazing to see so many Giants fans on the road.
The game was temporarily suspended due to a swarm of bees in the outfield. The DJ had a sense of humor and played the Beatles “Let it be” followed by “Don’t worry be Happy”. Let is be was one of the songs played at our recent wedding ceremony. We would “bee” lying if we said we didn’t enjoy this game.
After the game we headed out to Surprise and visited Le Anne’s cousins Marilyn and Bill. Marilyn prepared a wonderful meal and shared family photos with Le Anne. Their house was charming and done in Southwest decor. We plan on leaving at 5 am for Dodger stadium.

San Francisco Giants Game 2

Wednesday April 2, 2014

One up, one down-Baseball. Just about a reversal of opening day. Brandon Belt’s 3 run homer gave the Giants the early lead, but they went flat for 5 innings after that, with no base runner.

We will see Tim Hudson’s new season tonight with some great seats behind first base, front row, club level. Last night a man in the row behind us managed to make a beautiful catch. He and Bert enjoyed a great discussion of baseball. He had played in minors for the Twins playing both 1st and 3rd base. Bert gave him one of his baseball cards, and between scoring and discussing the greats of the game, the game was entertaining. Le Anne was disappointed that neither Hunter Pence nor Juan Perez got hits last night.

We had dinner at the Arizona baseball club last night. We figured it would be a great place to see a game next trip. You can buy the cheapest seat and enjoy a buffet dinner all game long. The food was reasonable and given the fact that ballpark food isn’t cheap, this option seems a great value. Shelly gave Bert the attention any 93-year-old fan deserves, and reserved us a window table for our next trip.

Today we hook up with Le Anne’s moms cousin Marilyn Denton for lunch at Sams cafe. It has been at least pre 1988 since Le Anne last saw Marilyn and Bill so lots to catch up on for the two of them.

What a start

Tuesday, April 1 2014

What a 1st game! Typical 2012 Giants story: lose the early lead, catch up in the 7th or 8th inning, and cause the fans to suffer “closer heart failure” before winning in the 9th. Posey and Belt woke up.

Tonight we will see Matt Cain on the mound. Temperature should be highs in mid 70’s and lows in the mid 50’s.

Chase field is larger than AT&T. In case you didn’t know: The red brick and green steel beam design was chosen to tie in with existing architecture in the area. They even incorporated the Arizona Citrus Growers packing house into the stadium. This may account for the fact that the stadium takes up 3 blocks. It was the first stadium that incorporated a retractable roof, air conditioning, and natural turf. The roof itself is 9 million pounds of steel. Two 200 horsepower motors can open the roof in slightly over 4 minutes. The roof is 517 feet across and when retracted has an opening of over 5 acres. A ball would have to be popped up 245 feet to hit the highest point of the roof. More facts tomorrow about the ballpark originally called Bank One Ballpark or “BOB”. Capacity is 48,633 and last night it was officially a sell out, but looked like about 3,000 seats were empty.

Last night Bert went for the traditional hot dog and I went for the Bratwurst with peppers, onions, and spicy mustard.

So Far, so great!

Game 1 on the road almost here

Monday March 31 2014

And so the journey begins…..With Le Anne doing most of the driving, we did the 750 miles to Phoenix, with an overnight in Ontario, CA, arriving in Phoenix Sunday afternoon.

We expect Madison to start this wild season with a good win tonight at 6:40. Winning this series would be a great start, but baseball being baseball, we will settle for a road split.

Temperatures are expected to reach 82 degrees today, with a low of 57. They are expecting wind gusts of up to 20 mph, which should make for an interesting start to the season.  We will bring jackets and a blanket , and  bundle up if necessary.  In the mean while we will get errands done and maybe a dip in the pool.

We will walk to Chase field and hope to get pictures for the blog.

Until tomorrow,

Le Anne and Bert
